Fun Week Day 2

Day 2 of "Joli's Vacation Fun Week" brought us to the Museum of Science, but of course not before we fueled up at Dim Sum this morning. The girls had a fantastic and exhausting time at the Museum and we took our time in the museum. My camera, unfortunately, died just as we got there, so you won't get to see pictures of the Butterfly Garden and such. But, the girls loved it in there (and so did Evan).

The day started off as every single day should -- with Dim Sum at one of our favorite dim sum places. It was only 10:00am, and it was great being one of only a few people there (they open at 9:30am).

Evan - his first time at the Museum of Science

Joli and Jada at the Dinosaur exhibit. They had a great time in the hands-on section where you get to "dig" for dinosaur bones.
Joli in the magnetic section where she made her own pretty decoration!

Other adventures for the week: Seeing a movie during the day, going to the park where we can feed the animals, heading to Chuck E Cheese, and the Brockton Fair during the day.

Both Joli and Jada start Camp next week and I go back to work the following week. So, we're trying to get all of our fun in this week during the days!

Bowling Today

The girls went bowling for the first time today and had a blast! We were joined by Gavie and Uncle JP for the 2nd round of the game.

When we pulled into Lolo's driveway, Joli screamed, "Hey! There's my red car!! That's my car! Yeah, it's messy on the inside but shiny on the outside." Now, I have no idea why Joli is getting a porche, but she seems to have willed it to happen.

We took an extra long trip to New Haven to visit Paulie and Kirsten in their new house and to celebrate Paul's 30th birthday. Long live Cracker Barrel Restaurant. Here is Joli kickin' Paul's butt in checkers.... Happy Birthday. You got served. By a 5 year old.

And, here is why our bowling games took 2 hours to play....

(Week 6 of our 52 weeks photos!)

We're Back!

What an amazing vacation! We're back from Camp Sunshine - our favorite place and week - as well as a weekend at Point Sebago. It rained all week and into the weekend, but that didn't stop us from having a great time.

Joli has really changed from year-to-year regarding her understanding of retinoblastoma. Each night, I asked her what she had enjoyed about camp. In the past few years, Joli has said things like, "I like my counselors" or "I like arts and crafts." Each night, every time I asked the question, she always mentioned something about retinoblastoma. She said she liked Camp because "here, I feel normal." She said, "Every one here has a special eye and I don't feel so weird." Also, "I get to be with Tacey."

Joli has really grown into understanding more about Rb, but also the differences between her year-long friends and her Camp friends. It broke my heart to hear that she feels "weird" when she's with other kids who have 2 seeing eyes. But, I'm glad to know she will grow up with a large group of kids who also have Rb.

Jada also loved Camp this year. She was a HUGE hit at the talent show, and I'll post that video once I get a chance. Evan also loved Camp... well, rather, people at Camp really LOVED Evan! He was being passed around so much that some people didn't even realize he was the same baby from "mom-to-mom!" We missed having Jorge around, and he joined us for the Parent's Dinner and Wish Boat launch at Camp. It was so nice having him experience what we love most about Camp Sunshine!

There are dozens and dozens of pictures, but here are a few highlights:

The girls getting ready for Costume Night. Jada and Joli danced the night away!

The bunk beds -- the girls love these bunk beds, and it was their first year that Joli was allowed to sleep up top! What a treat! They were pretending to "not hear me" when I told them to get down!

Chillin' one morning before breakfast!

Joli getting ready to launch her "wish boat." The kids make little wooden boats, light a candle on top, and then float out their boat on the lake. They then make a special wish and blow the candle out. Not a dry eye from anyone during this special ceremony!
At the Celebration Show! Jada is strutting her stuff and getting ready to sing "Itsy Bitsy Spider" with her Tot Lot friends.

Joli's best friend at Camp is Tacey. She is blind, a bilateral Rb survivor, and is the first ever Wrangler Rodeo Queen! She tours the country as the Rodeo Queen representative, and Tacey even barrel races horses! She gives new meaning - and new inspiration - to living as a blind child. And, naturally, she loved Evan!

Arriving at Camp, Tacey was one of the first kids we saw! Tacey knows it's Joli by the feel of her hair. It's the first thing she does when Joli comes near her.

Joli and Tacey sang another Hannah Montana song at the Talent Show. Joli has gotten so good at leading Tacey. She has a really great understanding of when Tacey needs to be led, and when Tacey can do it by herself. They were often hand-in-hand at Camp!

Oh, yes, Jada. Don't worry .. video to come. You've got to see Jada at the talent show. She was the talk of Camp!

Tacey saying her daily Good Morning to Evan!
Tacey is always feeling Joli's hair, so Jo thought she'd return the favor! This is the longest we've ever seen Tacey's hair. The first year we met her, she had just finished chemotherapy and was quite bald. Second year, a little bit of hair had grown; but now, she has beautiful long hair!

The three girls just before we had to pack up and leave Camp Sunshine!

Certainly more to come -- but it's late, and we've been gone for a LONG time! Everyone is home, happy, and safe!

Miss Straight Hair

Joli finally got her hair cut by someone who knows how to cut curly hair! We brought her to a fancy salon a few months back, and unfortunately, the woman didn't quite cut it right. Not this time! We had a very talented and wonderful lady cut it, and she did a great job! Joli got treated to not only a hair cut, but a full SHAMPOO AND STYLE. Basically, she got her hair blow dried and flat ironed! Here is our Miss Fancy Gal!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JORGE!!

Yes, it's true! Jorge is 34 years old (young)!

It's been a busy day here at the Vegalusan home. In celebration of Jorge's birthday.. everyone took baths! Woo hooo!! (kidding)

Here is Evan finally finding his hand - and now he won't stop staring at it!

Yesterday, the two baby boys finally were awake at the same time and got to chill for a bit.

And, naturally, Jorge wanted to get in on the picture!

But, never fail -- Evan and Kainoa stole the show again!

Today was also the first day that Jada got a haircut! We cut about 2 inches off and kept the last of her little baby curls in a plastic baggie for keepsake. Yeah, I'm sure she'll be grossed out when I show it to her in a few years.

In honor of Uncle Andy (who has been trying to get any one of my children in camoflauge clothing), Evan finally wore a pair of camo cargo pants. Enjoy, Andy. He peed his pants a few hours later....

We then took Jorge out to dinner with Andy, Marie, Nina and Lily. Yummmy! Here is a great smiling Nina!

A beautiful picture of Jada and Lily.. oh, wait... WHY DOES JADA ALWAYS MAKE THE CRAZIEST FACES??

The other side of the table - across from the crazy-face-making-kids, that is!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JORGE!!

Happy Graduation Party, Uncle Paul!

We had a fun time at Uncle Paulie's graduation party! There were tons of people there (missing Teetah Grace!) and lots of good food. We even managed to show Paul's graduation speech on a movie screen during the party. Sorry - we were so busy having fun that we didn't take a whole lot of pictures, so here's what we got!

Uncle Paul with his best friend Brian

The girls with gifts from Ate Geena and family ... that was so nice! Ate Geena called it "candy money!"
A rare family photo!

The girls with their frien Mia H.

Paul and Kirsten are heading to CT soon -- we'll miss you (though, somehow we think we'll see you MORE now that you will live far away!)
